The East Rockville Neighborhood Plan Update Kicks Off! The Mayor and Council have requested that a new neighborhood plan be created for the East Rockville neighborhood (Planning Area 2) to update the respective chapter in the city's 2021 Comprehensive Plan. Learn more.
East Rockville is an established, residential neighborhood located just east of Rockville Town Center and the Rockville Metro station. Given its central location, East Rockville has been a highly visible neighborhood of Rockville for decades.
The majority of the housing stock in East Rockville was developed in the 1940s and 1950s as single-unit, detached homes. In more recent years, shifting demographics, market conditions, and lifestyle preferences have resulted in expressed desires by many to see a more diverse range of housing options in the neighborhood. Through this update, the city will be looking at ways to increase residential diversity, capitalize on proximity to the Rockville Metro station, and envision the future of the smaller scale commercial uses that exist within the planning area. An updated neighborhood plan will guide the area as these development trends begin to take hold.
East Rockville is currently identified as Planning Area 2 in the Comprehensive Plan. The neighborhood is bound by the Metro/Amtrak/CSX train tracks on its west side, Howard Avenue to Lincoln Street on its north side, including Maryvale Elementary School and Northwest Park, and Norbeck Road/First Street on its east side, which meet at Veirs Mill Road to form the southern boundary of the neighborhood.
The new East Rockville Neighborhood Plan will supersede the Planning Area 2 chapter of the Comprehensive Plan, though the residential design guidelines for the area will remain intact.
