Mayor and Council Adopt Zoning Ordinance and Map

We are pleased to share that on Monday, June 29, Rockville’s Mayor and Council voted unanimously to adopt both the Zoning Ordinance Rewrite and Comprehensive Map Amendment. You can view the final motions, which include several minor amendments to the Zoning Ordinance, here. The new Zoning Ordinance and map will take effect Saturday, Aug. 1.

The Mayor and Council's vote marks the completion of a multi-year, citywide effort to modernize the city's zoning regulations to implement the zoning recommendations in the Rockville 2040 Plan and Town Center Master Plan, and to meet the changing living, working, and recreational trends of the community in the 21st century. Thank you for following along for the past two years, and thank you to everyone who participated in this process, whether by attending a meeting, providing feedback, or testifying before the Mayor and Council or the Planning Commission. The adopted ordinances make the city's zoning rules easier to use and better aligned with current planning practices, while also improving the development review and permitting process, supporting a broader range of housing options, and incorporating equity, resilience and sustainability throughout. This would not have been possible without you.
