View the Meeting on the Proposed Concept

The City of Rockville hosted two community engagement meetings to present the latest concept plan and entertain your thoughts and feedback. If you missed either of the meetings, please view the recording of the virtual meeting below.

What should RedGate Park look like in 10 years? Twenty years?

When the 131-acre RedGate golf course closed, the City of Rockville Mayor and Council voted unanimously to keep the land — one of the city’s largest remaining areas of open space — as a park.

But the question is, what kind of park? What amenities should RedGate Park have?

Now it's time to decide the details: trails for walking, biking and hiking? A dog park? Picnic areas? Natural areas for birdwatching and habitat preservation? An amphitheater for events? New sports fields with lights?

Over the next year, we invite to join your city to envision — and design — the future for RedGate Park.

10 A.M.-NOON, SATURDAY, APRIL 23

RedGate Park, 14500 Avery Road.

An in-person meeting, conducted in an open house format. Exhibits will provide information about the proposed concept and staff will be available to answer questions and receive comments. No formal presentation or discussions are planned. Visitors are encouraged to arrive at their leisure between 10 a.m. and noon.

The preferred concept includes a small-scale amphitheater, community gardens, a nature playground, an arboretum, picnic areas, a network of trails and renovating the existing clubhouse.

Plans for the park were developed based on the city’s strategic plan for recreation and parks in Rockville, considerable engagement with and feedback from the community, input from the Mayor and Council, and environmental constraints of natural features at the park.

Please do not develop Redgate Park

by FI, about 1 year ago

Like many of the views expressed in the public consultation, I have strong reservations about the Proposed Concept for Redgate Park. It is currently a totally unique, one-of-a-kind beautiful, wild expanse solely dedicated to nature, that is perfect for meditation and quiet walks, birding, and so on. No such other space exists in Rockville, and we should be proud to retain it.

There are already playgrounds in Rockville, there are picnic areas in Rockville. And why would we even consider introducing an ampitheater--to attract large gatherings of people and attendant noise and food and trash-- to such a location?

    I... Continue reading

    Local Chainsaw Carver

by CarvingColin, about 1 year ago
Hi friends and neighbors, I’m your friendly neighborhood chainsaw carver and I’d like to put my services up for offer. I heard someone suggest in the webex meeting to add carvings in the park as the need arises to take down dead, dying or dangerous trees (thanks Peter Carlson) and that’s exactly what I do! I just finished a big piece by the Brookside Gardens Conservatory which you can check out on my website www.carvingcolin.com. I’m just down the road in Olney and I would love to contribute beauty to my home community for public enjoyment. Consider this my business... Continue reading

Do not significantly redevelop Redgate Park

by jjakubek, about 1 year ago
Please keep the park as is with some minor improvements for access. Redgate Park is a unique wild enclave in Rockville and the surrounding urban area. It is a refuge for wildlife and along a migratory bird path along the east coast of the United States. Intensifying use of the park will only disturb these characteristics. The area does need a few improvements to enable access and to make it easier to move around the park.

    1. Pedestrian access from Taft Court is an excellent idea. This will enable people from Maryvale to access the park on foot and will... Continue reading

    Feedback after virtual meeting

by Julianngoldman, about 1 year ago
Thank you to everyone for planning for community feedback!

The virtual meeting brought things to my attention that I hadn't considered.

    1. I don't have a dog anymore, but I don't know if I would want a dog park at Redgate. Maybe if it were off to the side, with its own entrance. Defecation and urination can't be good for the plants.

    2. I don't want the paved paths accessible for bicycles. Pedestrians have to negotiate the bicyclists on the paths from Lake Needwood to Aspen Hill Road.

    3. I was originally in favor of an amphitheater at Redgate because... Continue reading

    Intergovernmental agreement and other comments

by richardtreinhard, about 1 year ago

How nice that my city, the City of Rockville, is planning a park out of what once was an underused golf course. Having gained a considerable amount of experience in my career on public parks, squares, and monuments, here are a few suggestions:

One. Redgate Park should be planned in full recognition of the fact that it abuts Rock Creek Regional Park. So far, there is scant mention of Rock Creek Regional Park in planning documents for Redgate Park. It is as if Rock Creek Regional Park doesn’t exist. Redgate Park is 131 acres. Rock Creek Regional Park is 1,800... Continue reading

    Nature trails and dog park

by WarrenNJ, about 1 year ago

Thank you for keeping this green space a park! It would be great to conserve a significant portion as a natural area, with trail connections to the Rock Creek trail. A dog park with at least two sections for dogs of different sizes would also be nice! From visiting other dog parks, a gravel ground covering makes a big difference in terms of mud and cleanliness, especially near the entrance.

Please connect to the Rock Creek Trail

by The Bitter Printer, about 1 year ago

It is impossible to ride the Rock Creek Trail and connect to the Carl Henn Millennium Trail, which is a shame. It would be an ideal way to do this if a Red Gate bike trail took you much further up Avery Rod and then had a safe crossing over to the Rock Creek Trail. This would make Red Gate Park and the northern end of Rock Creek Trail up to Lake Needwood fully accessible to bikes and provide a significantly enhanced biking system in the City.
